NYPD announces death of pedestrian in Staten Island crash; Driver charged

New York’s Staten Island. According to authorities, a 68-year-old man who was seriously hurt when he was hit by a car while crossing a West Brighton crossroads earlier this month has passed away from his wounds.

The Deputy Commissioner of Public Information for the NYPD issued a statement identifying the victim as Felipe Calyeca Moranchel of Meiers Corners.

According to authorities, the pedestrian hit happened on Monday, January 6, shortly after 6:30 a.m., near Forest Avenue and Raymond Place.

According to the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad, Moranchel was crossing Raymond Place in a crosswalk on Forest Avenue when he was hit by a 2016 Mazda CX-9 driven by Sun Hew, 65, who was trying to turn left from Forest onto Raymond at the time of the collision.

After EMS took Moranchel to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton in serious condition due to head injuries, authorities stated he was eventually declared deceased.

Police said Hew, of Latourette Lane in New Springville, was detained Thursday and is accused with failing to exercise due care and failing to yield.

Hew’s lawyer details were not immediately accessible.

Moranchel’s passing is the most recent in a startling series of events when pedestrians have been murdered or seriously hurt while trying to cross streets across the borough.

In relation to a December crash on the premises of Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze that claimed the life of 64-year-old Kathleen Murphy of Westerleigh, a hospital environmental care worker, another Staten Island man was taken into custody earlier this month, according to police.
