NYPD: Man, 68, in critical condition after pedestrian crash on Staten Island

New York’s Staten Island. According to police, a 68-year-old man was critically injured Monday morning after he was hit by an SUV while crossing the street in West Brighton.

A spokesman for the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information said the pedestrian collision occurred just after 6:30 a.m. near Forest Avenue and Raymond Place.

The 68-year-old man was hit by a white Mazda CX-9 when he was crossing Raymond Place in the crosswalk on Forest Avenue, according to the NYPD’s Highway District Collision inquiry Squad’s preliminary inquiry. When the collision happened, the 65-year-old driver was trying to turn left from Forest into Raymond, according to the police spokeswoman.

According to authorities, the pedestrian was transported by emergency medical services to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton after suffering a head injury.

The Mazda’s driver stayed on the scene.

The inquiry is still ongoing.

At first, the NYPD gave the collision victim a different age.

Alarming series of pedestrian crashes

The incident is the most recent in a concerning string of pedestrian-related collisions on Staten Island.

A 68-year-old man was hurt in a recent collision on Dec. 20 after being struck by a car on Charleston’s Arthur Kill Road.

On December 19, just before 8:50 a.m., a 51-year-old lady was struck by a car and sent to the hospital near the intersection of Winant Avenue and Mason Boulevard in Rossville.

On Staten Island, pedestrians have suffered serious or fatal injuries in at least seven collisions in recent months.

As further details become available, they will be provided. This is a developing story.
