Olympic snowboarder dies in avalanche at age 26

The Swiss skiing federation announced on Tuesday that Sophie Hediger, a member of the country’s snowboard cross team competing in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, had perished in an avalanche at a mountain resort.

The event happened at the Swiss resort of Arosa on Monday.

Hediger, 26, participated in both the mixed team and women’s snowboard cross competitions at the Beijing Games.

In the 2023–24 season, Hediger finished on the podium for the first time. In January, she placed second in St. Moritz, which was her best performance.

In a statement, Swiss-Ski CEO Walter Reusser said, “We are shocked and our thoughts are with Sophie’s family, to whom we offer our deepest condolences.” Tragically, cruelly, and far too soon, she passed away.
