Editor’s Note: We are recognizing some of the exceptional individuals who have demonstrated the best of Staten Island this year and naming them as Staten Island’s Brightest Lights of 2024 in recognition of the many Staten Islanders who have done so.
They deserve congratulations, as do all the residents of the borough who have discovered ways to support, advocate for, inspire, alter the world, and/or care about their neighborhood in 2024.
2024’s Top Attractions in Staten Island: The Brinn Family
In summary, their story:
Elizabeth and Anthony Brinn, who are parents to their energetic 7-year-old daughter, Ava Marie Brinn, and their loving, neurodivergent 4-year-old son, Anthony Vincent Brinn, share a home in Midland Beach.
The Brinns, like many other Staten Island parents of children with developmental disabilities (the number has been increasing at an alarming rate), use social and educational resources, support groups, and family unity to deal with the joys and difficulties of raising an autistic child.
During Autism Awareness Month, the Brinn family shared their home with Advance/SILive.com and spoke candidly to show the challenges of finding assistance on Staten Island and to give an honest account of what it’s like to raise Anthony Jr.
As parents, we simply want to see greater development and a quicker transformation since you see how much labor, time, effort, and money we’re putting in. Although there hasn’t been a light switch yet, Elizabeth continued, “There’s always this big promise and you always think that you’re going to see this light switch.”
