Photos show grounded White House aircraft still at Staten Island park; was to ferry staff after Biden visit

New York’s Staten Island. As of Tuesday afternoon, the grounded Osprey that was supposed to transport White House personnel from a Staten Island event on Monday was still at Miller Field.

According to the Associated Press, the dark green military plane was grounded because of a safety risk and had to stay in the air overnight Monday.

To continue their journey with President Joe Biden at a Friendsgiving event with U.S. Coast Guard members at Fort Wadsworth, the government officials and staff on board were taken off the Marine Corps HMX-1 presidential helicopter fleet and placed in an alternate Osprey.

The Osprey was still present as of early Tuesday afternoon, with four NYPD cars forming a perimeter around the enormous aircraft. At least three FDNY vehicles were parked in a nearby parking lot.

Although a witness reported flames under the right engine, the large tilt rotor aircraft showed no obvious external damage.

The words United States Marine Corps were displayed on either side of the Osprey, along with a handful of American flags.

The grounding occurs on the same day that lawmakers wrote to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, requesting that he re-ground the military’s entire fleet of V-22 Ospreys until solutions are found to address safety and design issues identified by the Associated Press in its recent investigation of the aircraft’s accident record, even though the incident only caused a minor delay for Biden’s departure, according to the Associated Press.
