WINDHAM, N.Y. A small plane crashed in the cold Catskill Mountains, killing a pilot and a rescue dog he was taking to an animal sanctuary. Two additional dogs were later discovered to have survived, according to police.
According to authorities, Seuk Kim, 49, was traveling from Maryland to Albany, New York, when the aircraft crashed on Sunday night in a secluded part of Windham, around 35 miles (55 kilometers) southwest of Albany.
The pilot perished from the hit, according to a preliminary investigation, said Greene County Sheriff Peter Kusminsky. According to the sheriff, the flight, which was transporting three dogs, was connected to a nonprofit organization that uses volunteer pilots to transport rescue animals.
A Labrador-mix puppy with broken bones and another dog with very minor injuries survived the collision.
Kusminsky remarked of the puppy with broken bones, “It was dug down into the snow and was pretty scared.”
According to the charitable organization that Kim was bringing the pups to, the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley, the dog, named Whiskey, was transferred to a veterinary hospital in Middletown, Connecticut. Pluto, an 18-month-old yorkie terrier mix, was the other dog who was discovered unharmed.
In an online memorial Monday, fellow dog rescuers expressed their gratitude to Kim, who was from Springfield, Virginia, for organizing pilots and flying flights throughout the nation.
Maggie Pryor, director of the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley, said in a statement that Seuk has saved the lives of hundreds of animals over the years who would have otherwise been put to death because of congestion at animal shelters.
According to Cathy West, who runs the Kuddles & Kisses K9 Rescue in Baltimore, Maryland, she last saw Kim in October at a local airport when he gave her a dog that had just been placed on a list to be put down at a Tennessee facility that was overcrowded.
According to West, he was bringing me five puppies and a mother dog. He put a lot of effort into encouraging other pilots to volunteer. that saving these dogs and preventing their death in shelters is a good thing.
According to a statement from Kim’s family, he was born in South Korea, came to this country with little more than a dream, and created a meaningful and giving life for himself by hard work and determination.
According to the statement, he was a generous, selfless person who always made the extra effort to assist people, regardless of the situation. It further stated that the many human and animal lives he impacted will carry on his legacy.
The crash was being looked into by the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration.
owing to turbulence prior to the incident, Kim requested permission to alter his altitude on Sunday owing to poor visibility, according to Kusminsky.
A few miles from the closest road, the jet crashed in the woods. According to the sheriff, rescuers found the wreckage in forests with roughly a foot of snow around midnight.
