A litter of pit bull puppies trapped in a urine-soaked doggy bag in Queens were rescued by NYPD officers who have charged a woman with animal torture. The rescue took place on Saturday in Far Rockaway and was captured on police bodycam footage, revealing the shocking conditions in which the puppies were found.
In the video, incredulous officers are seen opening a sack to discover five puppies inside, drenched in sweat and urine. “They’re so hot,” one officer can be heard saying, expressing concern that the puppies could have died within minutes if not rescued.
The incident unfolded at Beach Channel Drive and Horton Avenue around 6 p.m. when officers spotted a woman attempting to buy a puppy from 44-year-old Shirley Medina. When the potential buyer inquired about more puppies, Medina retrieved a sack, revealing more dogs inside. The concerned officers intervened, cutting open the wriggling sack to find the sweltering pups.
The parched puppies eagerly drank water from the officers’ hands before being handed over to the local American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) chapter for care. “Thanks to the actions of the New York City Police Department, these puppies were quickly transported to the ASPCA, where veterinary experts are conducting forensic exams and providing them with much-needed care,” an ASPCA spokesperson said.

Medina faces six counts each of animal torture and animal neglect, along with a charge of criminal possession of a weapon. Her criminal history includes a 2019 robbery involving the use of box cutters. The rescued puppies are now under the care of the ASPCA and receiving the necessary medical attention and care.
