Preservation League of Staten Island seeks award nominations

New York’s Staten Island –Public nominations are being accepted for the Staten Island Preservation League’s Historic Preservation Awards. A list of distinct categories is available for recognition.

In 1977, the PLSI was established as a borough-wide organization in New York City. By supporting important historic structures and a variety of cultural landscapes, it aims to uplift and unite the community. In order to restore some of these landmarks and educate the public, there are yearly award programs, walking tours, and educational support.

Submissions from the general public would be much appreciated. According to John Kilcullen, vice president of the Preservation League of Staten Island Board of Directors, this is how our 50-year-old historic preservation organization—the only one in Staten Island—can honor the people who strive to maintain these historic structures.

There are several other categories available for submission to the PLSI. The PLSI states that the following categories apply:

A historic and vintage home or structure that has been cherished, cared for, and tastefully maintained by its owners over the years without significant alterations or loss of its original exterior facade or character is recognized for its appreciation and stewardship.

A historic building having noteworthy architectural aspects and/or historical ties to Staten Island’s past is recognized as a Historic Treasure. The main structure and form of the building should ideally still be present. Additionally, buildings have a significant impact on the neighborhood and streetscape.

Block Beautiful honors a collection of historic residences that together create a more attractive and improved streetscape.

commercial Beautiful honors a company or group that highlights the historic architecture and streetscape of a commercial district while enhancing the retail shopping experience.

The Marty Pearsall Award is given to an individual or organization that supports historic and land preservation on Staten Island in remembrance of a longtime preservationist and PLSI Board Member.

The League’s highest honor, the Bronze Award, is given to a building that has undergone a complete historic restoration while preserving and restoring its original architectural features.

Although the PLSI has been accepting public contributions for many years, the organization has voted inside their own board since the rise and fall of COVID. The society has returned to accepting public entries for the first time since COVID-19.

This is mostly to honor the homeowners and property owners who take the extra effort to maintain the built environment, both historically and culturally, and who preserve the buildings. According to Kilcullen, owners who take this action improve the communities in which they reside and should be honored.

Although there is only one winner in each category, some, like the Appreciation and Stewardship award, have three to five. Everyone is invited to enter for more than one category if your building may fit under more than one.

Submissions can be emailed to [email protected] and must be received by April 13, 2025. You can reach someone at (917) 886-4389 with any questions.
