LIVE UPDATES: Joe Biden’s visit to Staten Island: Turkey, traffic, and gratitude >>
New York’s Staten Island — On Monday, it is anticipated that President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden would travel to Staten Island.
According to a White House statement, the Bidens will visit U.S. Coast Guard Sector New York in Fort Wadsworth to take part in a Friendsgiving dinner with service personnel and their families as part of the first lady’s Joining Forces campaign to help military families.
According to information obtained by The Advance/SILive.com, Capodanno Boulevard will be closed Monday for around four hours, most likely due to the visit. Additionally, starting Sunday night, the park-and-rides on Capodanno Boulevard are anticipated to close.
In a statement released Saturday, Borough President Vito Fossella said, “Please be advised that we have been informed that Father Capodanno Boulevard will be closed on Monday, Nov. 25, from 4 p.m. to approximately 8 p.m.” [The municipal Parks Department] has also informed us that the Park N Rides on Father Capodanno Boulevard will be closed from Sunday night and should reopen on Tuesday morning.
This Monday, you might want to think about every possible choice. Fossella went on.
Capodanno Boulevard was lined with metal NYPD barricades on Saturday afternoon. Additionally, people were informed by signs affixed to utility poles that certain locations were off-limits to parking on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
How buses could be redirected on Monday during the suspension was not immediately known.
Separately, Gateway National Recreation Area said that Miller Field in New Dorp, which borders Capodanno Boulevard, would be closed from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday for an aircraft training exercise. Locals reported hearing helicopter activity nearby when they called Advance/SILive.com.
In order to notify the schools that would be impacted by Monday’s closure, Fossella said his office has alerted the relevant authorities, including Staten Island’s District 31, which includes the borough’s public schools.
“If it’s feasible, we have asked the MTA to offer more train service and bus service along the South Shore during this time,” he continued. Additionally, we have requested that the St. George Ferry evening service be extended by the Department of Transportation.
From 4 to 5 p.m., the ferry will operate every 20 minutes; from 5 to 7 p.m., it will run every 15 minutes.
Additionally, they will try to halt construction if it is scheduled during that time. The president of the borough said.
Along with Father Capodanno Boulevard, other roads like Hylan Boulevard, Richmond Road, and other minor streets may also be impacted by this shutdown, according to Fossella. We shall therefore ask for additional traffic officers to assist in easing gridlock on the other roads.
He continued, “Our primary objective is to notify everyone that this is taking place so that we can see if we can assist during that time.”
When then-President Barack Obama traveled to New Dorpo to talk to locals and assess the damage following Hurricane Sandy in 2012, it was the last time a sitting president had visited Staten Island.
A year later, as part of the closing ceremonies for Habitat for Humanity’s 30th annual Carter Work Project, former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, paid a visit. They managed the efforts of hundreds of volunteers to restore and rebuild homes in Queens and elsewhere that were devastated by Hurricane Sandy.
Additionally, on the same day in 2016, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump traveled to Staten Island for different presidential campaign events. Trump’s speech at the Republican Party’s annual Lincoln Day Brunch at the Hilton Garden Inn in Bloomfield drew almost 1,000 attendees. Meanwhile, more than 500 people attended Clinton’s get-out-the-vote event at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden in Livingston.
