Rock star who suffered stroke while on tour says he may never play guitar again

While on tour in Toronto, Canada, in October, Matthew Sweet, a singer/songwriter and rock ‘n’ roll legend from the 1990s whose musical abilities have been best exhibited not just via his love of the guitar but also through his natural sense of humor, suffered a crippling stroke.

To date, more than $500,000 has been raised through the AGoFundMe campaign, which was established to assist in covering medical costs.

According to Sycracuse.com, Sweet, who acknowledges that he might never play music again, claimed that he knew something was horribly wrong when he felt a strange sensation in his eyes, heard loud noises in his ears, and broke out in a cold sweat.

He thanked supporters and provided an update on his present condition on the GoFundMe.

He wrote in the note on Saturday, “I’ve lived through the day where I realized I may never play guitar again, I may never draw a straight line again, or I may never enjoy the past time that developed over just the last year of my life, coloring with dip pens and ink, and painting with fountain pens.”

In the same account, Sweet was also quoted as adding, “I will try to make music,” in reference to what lay ahead. I’ll do my best. I’ll attempt to create art. Throughout a life that has been plagued with more sadness than anyone could possibly know how to handle, I shall attempt to express myself because it is all I have ever known and what has ever made me happy. I pray that each and every one of you finds a glimpse of love and hope today, as well as a future to work for, just as you have helped me discover it.

Sweet, 60, underwent medical treatment day and night to help alleviate his condition and keep it from becoming worse after being treated first in Toronto by doctors who practically saved his life.

In an Omaha recovery facility, the rock star is still getting better.

He is aware at this point that his career has been significantly harmed and that his future is still uncertain.

His complete recovery is being assessed daily, and the long-term consequences of his stroke are currently being assessed.

Sweet produced about 15 albums throughout the years, the most recent of which being Catspaw in 2021. His work over the years demonstrated both his natural musical ability and his excellent sense of humor.
