New York’s Staten Island. To honor the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedom, the Staten Island Giving Circle (SIGC) hosted a holiday breakfast on December 4.
Veterans, their spouses, and their families attended the event, which provided a chance to express gratitude and admiration for those who have served the United States.
In addition to being a joyous occasion, the breakfast served as a platform to increase public awareness of the continued difficulties that many veterans encounter, particularly during the holidays.
Many Veterans, especially those who are homebound, disabled, or homeless, suffer from loneliness and isolation as the majority of people concentrate on shopping and festivities.
According to SIGC founder Evelyn Kormanik, this event serves as both a means of expressing thanks and drawing attention to the needs of local veterans. For many of these heroes, the holidays can be difficult, and we want them to know they are remembered.
Supporting veterans via a variety of programs, such as tackling two significant problems—food insecurity and social isolation—is an important part of SIGC’s purpose. Based on these issues, SIGC started a program designed especially for veterans in the middle of 2024.
Just eight veterans participated in the program at first, but it has since expanded to around 70. In addition to food supplies, the program offers veterans a place to network, exchange stories, and get assistance from people who are sympathetic to their particular circumstances.
Not just providing food
One veteran at the event stated, “We’re not just providing food.” We’re establishing a place where we can unwind, reminisce, and truly connect with one another.
Alex Marrocco and Bob and Linda Ollis, whose contributions to SIGC’s programs were praised as they expand their efforts to support local veterans and other disadvantaged groups in the community, were among the special guests who attended the breakfast event.
Staten Island University Hospital (RUMC), Island Auto, Phillips 66, Sandy Hook Pilots Association, and Lynne Persing, the founder and former CEO of Conhagen Corporation, were also recognized as key event sponsors.
New facility
The announcement of SIGC’s new location at 4170 Hylan Blvd., which was once the location of Bozo’s Army/Navy Store, was another event highlight. To support SIGC’s expanding initiatives, the new facility will have a sizable food pantry with refrigeration.
Additionally, the area will house necessary donations for other SIGC programs that help homeless people, elders, and underprivileged children. SIGC will be able to better arrange and provide toys, clothing, personal care goods, and other necessities to individuals in need with the extra room.
“This new space will be very beneficial,” Kormanik remarked. It enables us to keep donations, expedite our work, and eventually assist more community members.
