New York’s Staten Island. A rooftop in Graniteville has been providing 140 houses with sustainable energy for the past six months.
Part of the UGE company’s series of community solar projects in New York City is the Expressway Plaza, which is home to a well-known Stop & Shop.
According to a written statement, the rooftop solar project generates slightly over half a kilowatt of energy, which will offset about 700 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually.
At least 30% of the energy produced by the Expressway Plaza community solar project will be set aside for Low-to-Moderate Income (LMI) homes as part of UGE’s LMI program. According to the announcement, UGE’s declared objective is to provide LMI households with over 25% of its operating portfolio by 2026, with a focus on strengthening renewable energy equity.
Feldco, the owner of Expressway Plaza, receives long-term lease payments for permitting solar panels to be installed on their buildings. UGE replaces the roof so that the structure can sustain the panels for the duration of their life.
According to the statement, the panels will remain in place for at least 22 years.
According to Feldco Partner and Vice President Greg Feldman, Feldco is a family-run company dedicated to sustainable building practices and building enduring relationships with the communities in which it operates. By joining UGE as a community solar host, we are fulfilling those pledges by giving the neighborhood around Expressway Plaza access to sustainable energy and energy cost reductions.
