Following a store-wide sale, the Mariners Harbor specialty market served its last patrons last week. Asian Food, which first established itself on the West Shore before closing its South Avenue location in 2018, required six years to open the new 9,990-square-foot business. In the spring of 2023, the redesigned version debuted at the Roman Plaza strip mall.
The proprietor of the store was unavailable for comment.
Food sources follow the people
When Asian Food moved from Travis, it was a much-anticipated grocery store on the North Shore. Its inventory tailored to South East Asian and Chinese diets was welcomed by fans of both the new and old sites.
However, the Asian community on the East Shore has grown significantly, maybe to the disadvantage of Asian food. And just as the population of that area of the island has grown dramatically in recent years, so too have its culinary alternatives, making it a competitor for a market with a fitting name.
When HL Supermarket, located at 2380 Hylan Blvd., opened in November 2022 in the former Excelsior Grand catering hall, there was a lot of enthusiasm and traffic.HL displays its dry goods and chilled products around large fish and produce aisles, as has been its goal. Customers are further supplemented by C-Town at 2071 in Concord.
With global pantry ingredients, Costco, Met Foods, and ShopRite have also accelerated their Asian food offerings. Customers have benefited greatly from the expanded options, which include a more competitive marketplace and the ease of local shopping.
