Staten Island college hoops roundup: Wagner men stay in mix in tight NEC race

It looks like anyone can win the men’s basketball tournament in the Northeast Conference halfway home.

Once more.

Unconvinced? The defending conference champion Wagner, who upset Le Moyne 73-61 on Saturday at the Spiro Center, is just 4-5 in the conference but has already defeated Central Connecticut, which is in first place, on the road. By the way, Central has lost both games at home and is 7-2 in the NEC.

You may also recall that Wagner, who was ranked sixth in the NEC Tournament the previous year, earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament by winning three away games.

Zaire Williams led the Seahawks (12–10) with 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists on Saturday. Zae Blake added 14 points by shooting 5 of 8 from the field (4 of 4 from 3-point range). Ja Kair Sanchez finished with 14 points after making 4 of 5 field goals and 4 of 4 foul shots. Wagner had a scorching 56.8% field goal percentage (21 for 37), which included 10 of 17 three-pointers.

With 24 points in the end, AJ Dancier led the Dolphins (7-16, 2-6) in scoring. For Le Moyne, Dwayne Koroma contributed three steals and fourteen points. Robby Carmody scored eight points in the end.

On Thursday, Wagner will host LIU.

WAGNER WOMEN

Syracuse, New York — LeMoyne won 62-52 in the NEC on Saturday after outscoring Wagner 20-8 in the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Wagner performed dreadfully from the field, going 0 for 5 from three and only making 3 of 17 attempts.

Keana Foz and Julia Fabozzi combined for 12 points and 16 points for Wagner (5-15 overall, 2-6 NEC).
