Staten Island HS wrestling: Donald Douglas Memorial Championships to be staged this weekend at Petrides

Petrides will host the two-day, citywide event starting Saturday, marking the first time the Mayor’s Cup wrestling tournament—now known as the Donald Douglas Memorial Championships—will visit Staten Island.

In what many view as a true city championship, the tournament brings together wrestlers and schools from the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL), Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA), and New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS).

It is anticipated that about 400 wrestlers will participate, with 32 grapplers competing in each of the 13 weight classes.

Petrides, Tottenville, Monsignor Farrell, and St. Joseph by the Sea are expected to perform well. In 2023, Farrell took home the trophy, and the Pirates finished third. In 2024, there was no competition for the Mayor’s Cup.

The competition begins at Petrides on Saturday at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m.

The championship and placement matches are anticipated to begin at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, with activity starting at 9:30 a.m.

This year, the tournament was renamed in honor of the longstanding PSAL executive director, who passed away at the age of 58 from a heart attack in 2021.

Kara Buzga, a photographer for SILive.com, will attend the ceremony on Saturday morning and post a gallery on the website on Saturday afternoon.

On Sunday afternoon, Buzga will resume her picture shoot, and on Monday morning, a comprehensive account of the event will be published on SILive.com along with her photo gallery.
