Staten Island HS wrestling: Historic win for first-year team South Richmond HS

South Richmond High School in Pleasant Plains will make history on January 6, 2025.

In a PSAL 1A Brooklyn/Staten Island division dual meet at home on Monday, the school’s first-year wrestling team, led by Wilson Morales, defeated CSI/McCown 37-36 for their first-ever victory on the mat. South Richmond won via forfeit earlier in the season.

“We are so proud of our athletes and their dedication,” Morales added. This triumph is more than just a score; it’s evidence of our team’s perseverance and commitment, as well as the abilities of our student athletes on and off the wrestling mat.

To be dedicated to a high school team makes these students very pleased. Our primary goal is to provide a supportive environment for our students and give them the opportunity to compete with all other students in New York City.

The sole District 75 school in New York City offering PSAL sports is South Richmond High School. In addition, the school offers teams for table tennis, indoor track, bowling, and handball. Students with severe difficulties might receive highly specialized instructional support from District 75.

Last school year, SRHS Principal Anthony Casella and Assistant Principal Gerard Tingos pushed for the school to authorize four sanctioned sports, including wrestling.

In an article published in Advance last May, Casella stated that it was unquestionably a passion of hers. Children in District 75 were denied access to PSAL athletic activities for an excessive amount of time. South Richmond will become well-known as a result of our success in obtaining PSAL approval for indoor track, wrestling, table tennis, handball, and the bowling team that is currently participating. Our goal is to provide the children with a thorough understanding of how they can engage.

Senior Carl Jones (190) and junior Carlos Adams (160), who prevailed via pins, led the effort for SRHS on Monday.

On Tuesday, January 14, Morales’ 2-2 squad wraps up its home campaign against Bayard Rustin Educational Complex. “This historic win marks a milestone for the school and sets the stage for a promising season ahead,” he added.

McCown/CSI dropped to 1-4.
