On January 8, 2025, retired NYPD homicide detective George A. Scroope passed away. According to his obituary, the Brooklyn native lived on Staten Island for over 60 years. He became a homicide investigator in 1961 after joining the New York Police Department. After twenty years of exemplary service, he retired from the NYPD and served in the South Bronx at the 41st Precinct (Fort Apache). On December 19, 2024, Nicholas Navarino, 90, passed away. He was a cherished husband, father, and teacher. According to his obituary, Nicholas was a devoted teacher who led a life filled of kindness, love, joy, and purpose. As a lifelong teacher in New Jersey, the Staten Island native rose to the position of principal at Grand View Elementary School in Piscataway and then Washington Elementary School in Millburn. When he passed away, 103-year-old World War II veteran Anthony Aquaro was the oldest surviving retired firefighter in New York City. At age 31, the veteran Staten Islander took the FDNY fireman oath of office. He served 26 years with Brooklyn’s Union Street Engine 269 unit. Wealth is my greatest blessing, Aquaro stated in 2023. CURRENT DEATHS

On January 3, 2025, David Ross Averack, 69, died in Tampa, Florida, surrounded by his devoted family. He was born in Brooklyn on December 8, 1955, and later relocated to Staten Island in 1978 before moving to Florida in 2022. After more than 30 years of service, David retired from the New York City Department of Sanitation in 2011. Patricia, his wife of 47 years, their four children, and their twelve grandchildren survive him. David’s life will be celebrated privately at a later time. In 1950, Thomas Savin Sr. was born in Queens. He was the family’s cherished baby and the youngest of eight siblings. He became known as Mr. Fix It as he grew older, and everyone he knew turned to him for any repairs. With nine grandchildren, he was a loving grandfather.
