At the New York City Bar Association’s annual award ceremony on Monday, Executive Assistant District Attorney Darren Albanese was presented with the Thomas E. Dewey Medal.
In honor of Thomas E. Dewey, the former Manhattan district attorney and governor of New York, the award is given yearly to a distinguished prosecutor from each of the five boroughs and the Special Narcotics Prosecutor’s Office.
“I am extremely humbled to be a part of this Dewey Medal fraternity,” Albanese stated. Being a prosecutor has given me the opportunity to pursue my passions of trying cases, defending crime victims, and holding criminals accountable.
Albanese expressed his gratitude to Staten Island District Attorney Michael E. McMahon for providing him with the chance to work on some of the most significant challenges facing prosecutor offices across the state and the city.
“Some of the best lawyers in the state are in the Richmond County District Attorney’s Office,” he stated. Being a member of this team makes me proud.
Albanese started his career in the Sex Crimes Bureau of the Kings County District Attorney’s office, where he tried and prosecuted over 30 criminal cases.
Before joining the Richmond County District Attorney’s office in March 2017 as deputy bureau chief of the Domestic Violence Bureau, Albanese left Brooklyn in March 2015 to become the first executive director of the Staten Island Family Justice Center, where she oversaw all facets of the center, including program management, center operations, and community engagement.
Prior to his current position as executive ADA for criminal court operations and professional development, Albanese was appointed bureau chief of the criminal court division.
“Darren Albanese has dedicated his professional life for almost twenty years to protecting victims of crime and holding their offenders accountable in the courtroom,” McMahon stated. The Richmond County District Attorney’s office and the people of Staten Island are fortunate to have Darren on their side, from training our office’s newest assistant district attorneys to handling some of the most serious felony matters handled by our Domestic Violence Bureau in the courtroom. I am extremely proud of Darren and cannot imagine a more worthy recipient of the 2024 Thomas E. Dewey Medal.
