Staten Island Rep. Malliotakis to meet with Trump at Mar-a-Lago this weekend

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — This weekend, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island/South Brooklyn) is traveling to Mar-a-Lago with three other members of the New York congressional delegation to meet with President Donald Trump to discuss legislation.

Malliotakis, Rep. Andrew Garbarino, Rep. Mike Lawler, and Rep. Nick LaLota—all Republicans—will fly to Florida for a strategy conference, with a primary focus on state and local tax deductions, according to a News12 story.

Malliotakis confirmed her intention to speak with Trump this weekend in an interview with the Advance/SILive.com on Monday.

When Trump’s 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was implemented, many New Yorkers’ SALT (State and Local Tax) deduction was capped. According to the Bipartisan Policy Center, SALT was first implemented in 1913 and permits taxpayers to deduct a portion of their federal taxable income from state and local income taxes, sales taxes, and/or property taxes.

The $10,000 cap on the SALT deduction imposed by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act caused conflict among Republicans, Democrats, and taxpayers.

Trump promised to return SALT in a September campaign post on Truth Social.

However, not all Republican lawmakers in Washington, DC, agree on SALT.

The party traveling to Mar-a-Lago is expected to battle with colleagues who support greater restrictions on SALT, according to an NBC report. However, Malliotakis has stated that the GOP needs the votes of the New York Republicans in order to prevent the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act from expiring.

In reference to the Republicans’ slim majority in the U.S. House, she told NBC, “Quite frankly, with a majority of two, New York, New Jersey, and California members really have a seat at the table here, because an expiration of [the 2017 tax law] would completely eliminate [the cap on] SALT.”

According to LaLota, he and other Republicans in New York will push for a higher SALT cap, according to News12.

Rep. Pat Ryan of the Hudson Valley, who urged for Democrats to be invited to Mar-a-Lago this weekend, is among the New York Democrats aiming to garner bipartisan support for lifting the SALT cap.

And according to reports, Long Island Representative Tom Suozzi stated that he is open to cooperating with Republicans to alter the SALT cap, reaching out across party lines.

If no legislation to extend the cap is passed, it will expire on December 31, 2025.
