New York’s Staten Island — There will be a lot of activities on Staten Island to commemorate Black History Month. All ages on the island are welcome to these events.
Community Alliance of Staten Island
Painting with Cultural Soul Colors / Saturday, February 1, 2–5 p.m.
Black History painting and trivia will be part of the art and community event hosted by the Staten Island Community Alliance. Light refreshments will be provided, and registration is required.
Building community empowerment and equality is the goal of the nonprofit organization that serves Staten Island’s underprivileged communities. The Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden, Building P, 100 Richmond Terrace, is the venue for the event.

College of Wagner
Connection, Bravery, and Community: Black and Jewish Spotlight Gallery / Thursday, February 6, 6–8 p.m.
This 10-panel touring exhibition, presented by Kennesaw State University’s Museum of History and Holocaust Education (MHHE), examines Jewish and Black history in the US. Minorities are getting closer to their ultimate aim of community participation because of their common ideals and desire for equality and human rights.
Dr. Rita Reynolds, a history professor at Wagner College, and L. Jean-Francois, a former co-president of the Columbia Jews of Color Caucus, will provide the introductory comments.
All children, parents, and students are welcome to attend the gallery, which will be free of charge and held in the Horrmann Library.
Children’s Staten Island Museum
A Caribbean Vibe: Experience the Sounds of the Islands / Saturday, February 8, 4–4:45 p.m.
An event with roots in Afro-Trinidadian history will be held at the Staten Island Children’s Museum. Performers from Caribbean Vibe Steel Drum Bands will bring excitement to the celebrations for people of all ages.
The history of the Afro-Trinidadian liberation movements may be seen in the origins of each instrument. Among others, Amazon and Empire State Bank will support the event.
Baptist Church in the First Central
Health Fair: 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 22.
Remember to mark your calendars for the annual health fair hosted by First Central Baptist Church. There will be community achievement awards, music, and health screenings at the fair.
In order to address and assist with the health disparities in Black and Brown communities, the church annually collaborates with Choose Healthy Life (CHL). A nonprofit organization called CHL gives Black churches the tools and assistance they need to expand the reach of health services to populations that are difficult to reach.
Entry is free and open to people of all ages. The pastor, Rev. Dr. Demetrius S. Carolina Sr., will attend the ceremony, which will take place at 117 Wright St.
Museum of Staten Island
Taking Care: Sea View Hospital’s Black Angels / On display through September 28
In 1951, the Black Angels, a group of black nurses, made significant contributions to the treatment of tuberculosis and are being honored by the Staten Island Museum. In order to provide treatment for their patients, these angels put their lives in danger to overcome racial barriers.
Gabriella Leone and Rylee Eterginoso curated the display.
Adult admission is $15, member admission is $10, and student admission is free.
