Staten Island youth sports report: SIBFL championship games; Middle School hoops; Wrestling

Last weekend in Travis, the SWF Trucking Bandits won the Staten Island Boys Football League Senior division title after defeating the Walter P. Kelly Packers 19–6 to conclude an unbeaten (11-0) season.

Shane Cowan, the Bandits’ tailback, ran for a game-high 166 yards and a 64-yard touchdown. Brayden Louisson and quarterback Jack Murphy connected on two touchdown aerials that were 8 and 26 yards long, respectively.

On defense, Nick Murphy, Carmine Daleo, Prince Sprinkler, and Kenny Danielsen were outstanding, and Cowan and Dante Miller combined for 12 tackles.

The Bandits’ running success was greatly aided by their offensive line, which included fullback Miller, CJ Scire, Danielsen, Daleo, Danielsen, Sprinkler, and Salvatore Ferraioli.

Marcus Velazquez scored the only touchdown for the Packers.

The Gotham Auto Ducks defeated the Bella Mama Rosa Steelers 22–12 in a thrilling comeback led by running back Stephen Largo to win the junior division.

Largo scored three goals in the second half to help the Ducks, who were behind 12–2 at the interval, rally. Paul Bosco, Hunter Groves, Anthony Perretti, Chris Depascale, Randy Paulino, Alex Arbuznikov, and William Avitabile made up a formidable offensive line in the trenches. Joey Raniero made a crucial interception late in the game, and defensive contributions came from Christian Ferraioli, Domenico De Rosa, Anthony Schuhmann, and Sal Leto.

The Steelers’ touchdowns were scored by Justice Hampton and Dylan Clemente.

For the Flyweight title, Anthony Paninoteca’s Titans defeated the Panacea Braves 19–6. Jonathan Santora also found the end zone on the ground, and Liad Hanuka (130 yards rushing) and Amari Knight (110) each scored rushing points. Elijah Sprinkler ran 100 yards as well. On the defensive line, Dylan Glasper, Noah Garcia, Themi Macropoulos, Christian Schroeder, and Jackson Jacobs all excelled.

The sport of wrestling

Last weekend at Edward R. Murrow High School, South Richmond grapplers won third place overall in the Beat the Streets tournament.

South Richmond’s top finishers were Dominick Barbozote (60-lbs.), Izzy Nunez (98), Nick Gonzalez (135), and Kayden Orcel (160), while Jace Barbozote (110) and Jaxson Cortes (105) took third and fourth place, respectively.

Three medals were won by the Tottenville Wrestling Club. Ashton Jones, Celine Elliott, and Caiden Justesen came in second and third, respectively.

Basketball in Middle School

In a JV game, IS 34 Gold overcame a deficit to overcome the IS 72 Bulldogs 36-34, led by 16 points from George Zharkin and 11 from Ameer Suleiman. While Tomasso Bertos dominated the boards, Gavin Snell contributed six markers and a strong floor game.

Erlinda Pera and Kelsey Tessitore each scored 12 points in the girls’ varsity match as IS 34 defeated PS 48, 52-37. Julianna Campanella led the Eagles’ offense effectively, and Kate Boyle made three three-pointers for the champions. On defense, Kyla Mrakovic and Viv Delmar were excellent.
