Livingston-based Wyeth and Krizel Mendoza, a married couple with three children, are combining their passion for the Philippines with excellent coffee. For a genuinely genuine, Filipino-inspired coffee experience, they have introduced Batangas Best, a brand composed entirely of Liberica beans.
Liberica beans are bigger than Arabica and Robusta beans, have a distinctive teardrop-like shape, and smell strongly of flowers and fruit—often compared to jackfruit.
After being introduced to the Philippines from western/central Africa by the Spanish, this distinctive Liberica cultivar flourished in the hills of Lipa City, Batangas, where it is now grown exclusively, according to Krizel Mendoza. Our coffee is genuinely unique and premium because it is only harvested once a year. In contrast to our upbringing in the Philippines, we have never witnessed this type being appreciated in the United States.
Promoting this premium type, which is usually mixed with other species like Arabica, Robusta, or Excelsa, to the American coffee market would be a great way for us to support our local community. In addition to providing outstanding single-origin coffee, Batangas Best promotes environmental sustainability and cultural heritage by assisting local people and direct trade.
