New York’s Staten Island. This week’s Staten Island’s Best Dressed features images of Shaw-na Dixon, the renowned chef and proprietor of Shaw-na’s House, Stapleton, who is still making waves in the culinary industry after being listed among the top 50 restaurants in the U.S. for 2024 by the New York Times, solidifying Staten Island’s place on the national culinary map.
Dixon recently appeared on the TODAY show’s annual Throwback Thanksgiving Special with 21 other internationally renowned chefs, sharing her Thanksgiving recipes and advice. Her appearance next to Martha Stewart, the renowned lifestyle expert, added even more significance to the event.
While they were together, Dixon talked about some of her incredible achievements, such as the fact that Shaw-na’s House is the first restaurant in Staten Island history to be awarded two stars by the Times. She also prepared her signature Thanksgiving dishes, roasted acorn squash with mashed parsnips, which were a hit with the crowd.
Dixon, a Staten Island Advance Community Giant, stated that Martha was quite impressed. We hope she visits Shaw-na’s House so she can see it for herself. Hopefully, we will have the opportunity to serve the Queen of Lifestyle in Stapleton, USA!
A week prior, Dixon assisted Virgil’s Real BBQ, the renowned, genuine Southern barbecue located in the center of Times Square, in commemorating 30 years of providing smokey, savory food since its 1994 launch.
Following the ceremonial ribbon cutting in the morning, Virgil pitmasters presented daily Virgil’s BBQ dishes and Southern specialties, such as crispy fried catfish and exquisite smoked Tomahawk steaks, at a private dinner event in the evening.
In addition to announcing their new menu, which includes specialties from Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas, the Carolinas, and Missouri, Virgil’s also celebrated the milestone by partnering with Dixon, whose specialty is savage fries topped with braised oxtail, four cheese mac and cheese, and collard greens.
This year has been incredibly fruitful, and my perseverance and hard work have given me the chance of a lifetime to share love through collaboration, education, learning, and personal development, Dixon continued. I am extremely grateful to the families of Virgil and Carmine for welcoming me and letting me use my soul food gift on their menu.
Being a part of their 30-year celebration is an honor since we have not only built incredible history but are also constructing for the future. This was one of the best parts of my incredibly successful year, and I will always remember this chance because it has transformed my life and given me new opportunities. With a sprinkle of love from Shaw-na’s House, I wish them luck.
Additionally, Dixon’s dishes will help The Lotus Bridge, a Staten Island-based organization that delivers training on sustainable urban farming and pantry meals to people in need, through the end of the year.
