Steve Garvey’s Expensive Senate Bid By Raising Millions

In California, former baseball star Steve Garvey is making headlines for his costly campaign for the open Senate seat. Despite facing steep expenses, Garvey has managed to raise millions in recent weeks.

From mid-February to the end of March, Garvey raised an impressive $3.4 million. However, his fundraising efforts came with a hefty price tag, totaling over $1 million in expenses. These expenses included digital ads, direct mail, commission costs, and venue fees.

Despite his significant fundraising, Garvey faces a tough battle to win the Senate seat previously held by Sen. Dianne Feinstein. Republicans haven’t won a statewide race in California since 2006, making it a daunting challenge, even for a celebrity like Garvey.

Adding to the challenge is Garvey’s opponent, Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, who has millions at his disposal for the general election. Schiff’s fundraising prowess and expected victory pose a major obstacle for Garvey.

Garvey’s campaign has focused on themes of “common sense” and “consensus,” rather than specific policy proposals. While he lacks big-name endorsements or donations, Garvey has managed to build his war chest through small-dollar contributions, many of which come from out-of-state supporters.

Despite the high costs of fundraising, Garvey’s campaign manager, Andy Gharakhani, remains optimistic. Gharakhani emphasized Garvey’s grassroots support, with an average donation of $57 from 62,000 individuals in the first quarter of 2024.

He believes that Garvey’s investment in campaign infrastructure will give him the tools needed to compete successfully in November’s election.
