New York’s Staten Island — The Washington Hotel, which was only a few blocks from the beach and had an adjacent restaurant, appeared to be the ideal summer retreat in a 1949 postcard that I discovered online from the NYPL Digital Collection.
In the present day, the neighborhood is entirely residential. In the area where the hotel was located, new buildings with raised foundations were constructed following Superstorm Sandy.
