These are the best cities to find a job, report says. Where does NYC rank?

New York’s Staten Island — You might wish to look outside of New York City if you’re looking for a new employment. The metro ranks 139th out of 182 locations surveyed, making it one of the worst places in the US for job prospects.

When choosing the ideal place to find work, it’s crucial to consider factors other than the unemployment rate or the quantity of open positions, according to Chip Lupo, an analyst for WalletHub, the personal finance website that funded the study. From average pay and perks to job security and general contentment, quality is just as important as quantity.

And according to WalletHub’s research, NYC lacks all of that: the average commute time is excessively long, housing costs are extremely high, and yearly transit expenses are out of proportion to income. However, the figures are significantly better in other cities around the nation.

According to Lupo, one of the main reasons Scottsdale, Arizona, is the greatest city for jobs in 2025 is that it has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation and tops the list of cities with paid internships. Furthermore, even accounting for the cost of living, Scottsdale boasts one of the highest median household incomes in the nation, at over $102,000.

Due to the quantity of open positions and the caliber of its businesses, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is rated as the second-best city for jobs. The third-best city for jobs, Columbia, Maryland, was praised for having a high median household income of $124,000.

However, several cities scored lower than New York City. The data shows that Newark, New Jersey, is one of the places with the fewest job prospects, closely followed by Detroit, Michigan, and Las Vegas, Nevada. Among the cities with the slowest job growth are Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and New Haven, Connecticut.
