New York’s Staten Island — Although there is still a gender wage discrepancy in the country, new data indicates that some states are doing a better job of balancing the scales.
According to gender-specific earnings statistics for 2023 recently released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women employed full-time as wage and salary workers nationwide made an average of $1,005 per week, which is 83.6% of the median of $1,202 earned by men.
The announcement warned that the wages comparisons in this report are general and do not account for a number of variables that may be significant in explaining pay disparities, including work experience, specialty, and job abilities and responsibilities.
In 2023, women’s weekly wages in New York were $1,090, or 84.2% of men’s $1,295; this suggests that the pay gap in New York is marginally less than the national average.
However, compared to the previous year, when New York women earned 86.5% of males, the 84.2% is a more than two percentage point decline.
With women earning 89.9% of men’s wages, California had the smallest gender wage gap, while Louisiana had the largest, at 73.7%.
