These were the most popular baby names in NYC last year

The city Health Department revealed the most popular names for babies born across the five boroughs in 2023, and Emma and Liam remain the most popular choices among New Yorkers. Last year, 98,389 babies made their New York debut.

Since 2016, Liam has been the most popular boy’s name, while since 2017, Emma has been the most popular girl’s name. According to birth certificate statistics from New York City, 382 Emmas and 743 Liams were born in 2023. Among New Yorkers, Mia and Noah remain in second place.

“What makes our city so special are our youngest New Yorkers,” said acting Health Commissioner Dr. Michelle Morse. Emma, Liam, Mia, Noah, and all the other babies are welcomed to New York. Our city is a happier, more optimistic place for the new year and beyond because of you.

Several new names rose to the top of the 2023 list, including Sofia, which had previously been pushed out of the top 10 by Esther, although the majority of the names from the 2022 top 10 remained well-liked. While Chloe, the top baby name in 2020, won with about 250 baby girls given the name in 2023, Isabella and Amelia rose a few points.
