New York’s Staten Island — The snack bars on the Staten Island Ferry will reopen for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic.
According to a DOT news statement on Monday, the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) stated that a new vendor had been chosen to run the ferry’s concession stands and that service would resume within the next two months.
The city has finally chosen Dunkin, the venerable provider of coffee and doughnuts, to take over the long-dormant concession stalls aboard the iconic boats after announcing the start of the procurement process in January.
According to the DOT, the concession contract permits the selling of alcohol on the ferry, even though it is outside of Dunkin’s normal business operations. The vendor will be obtaining the required licenses to serve beer.
First, Dunkin’ will probably only run on the Staten Island Ferry’s newest fleet, which consists of the Dorothy Day and Staff Sergeant Michael H. Ollis.
According to the DOT, service will eventually be extended to the remainder of the fleet.
The EDC has the opportunity to provide two distinct five-year extensions to the concession deal, which has a 10-year term.
Operations must start within 60 days of Dunkin’ signing a lease with the city on November 20.
Snack bar service is anticipated to resume in the fall, according to a DOT official earlier this year.
We are happy that passengers will soon be able to enjoy concessions once more on the busiest municipal ferry service in the nation, the Staten Island Ferry, said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. We are excited to provide food and drinks to the millions of passengers that ride the Staten Island Ferry, which is a symbol of our city.
The vacant shop property in the St. George and Whitehall ferry ports is still being sought after by the city.
The EDC released a request for bids in March, seeking companies to offer retail services.
Shops such as Au Bon Pain, Dairy Queen, and a sizable convenience store had closed at the St. George Ferry Terminal starting in late 2023. According to earlier reports by the Advance/SILive.com, the majority of stores on the Manhattan side of the Staten Island Ferry route have continued to operate.
