From the start, Pamela Hayden has been a part of The Simpsons.
Now, thirty-six seasons later, she is bidding farewell.
Hayden, who has long provided the voice of Bart Simpson’s friend Milhouse Van Houten, is retiring.
The actor played a number of characters on the show, including Jimbo Jones, Rod, and Todd Flanders, but her most well-known role was that of the bespectacled figure.
Pamela Hayden, thank you for 35 years of Milhouse and many more! The Simpsons’ social media account announced Hayden’s departure on Wednesday.
A video retrospective with an interview with 70-year-old Hayden, who began the show in 1989, was included in the post.
She remarked, “One thing I love about Milhouse is that he keeps getting up after getting knocked down.” I adore the small one.
Hayden also provided the voice of Sarah Wiggum, Chief Wiggum’s wife, and Ralph Wiggum’s mother.
This Sunday’s Treehouse of Horror Presents: Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes (8 p.m. on Fox, streaming the following day on Hulu) marks Hayden’s final episode.
In the premiere episode of The Simpsons, “Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire,” which aired in December 1989, Hayden’s character Milhouse made his television debut.
Prior to that, however, Milhouse appeared with Bart in a Butterfinger commercial called The Butterfinger Group in 1988, when The Simpsons was a Fox animated short on The Tracey Ullman Show (see below).
The character’s name was derived from former President Richard Nixon’s middle name, Milhous, by Simpsons creator Matt Groening.
Hayden’s characters will be recast in the show.
