Tottenville RHP Jason Bassett upped his velocity and, not coincidentally, he committed to this D1 school

For Tottenville hurler Jason Bassett, a change of scenery on the travel baseball circuit was a game-changer.

After the previous season concluded, the right-hander decided to sign with the TKR Reds, where he began working with pitching coach Dustin Javins. He had excelled on the mound during his first varsity season with the Pirates last spring.

Bassett’s speed quickly increased from a peak of 82 mph to 89 mph.

The 17-year-old Bassett, a former South Shore LL All Star who spent two years at St. Joseph by the Sea before moving to nearby Tottenville, said, “I started getting looks.” I was willing to listen to any school, but I had no idea who would actually get in touch with me.

According to information obtained by Advance/SILive.com, Bassett just signed a National Letter of Intent to join Marist College on a partial athletic scholarship after making a fruitful visit to the school’s campus in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Bassett had gotten in touch with recruiting coordinator Mike Coss before his visit, and when he visited the MAAC school’s campus, he finally met head coach Lance Ratchford.

“I went to the school and ended up really enjoying it,” he stated. I knew it may get cold up there because it’s so close to the Hudson River, but I didn’t care.

I’m rather pleased with my choice. I pray a lot, and I believe Marist is a fantastic fit for me,” Bassett added. Having this opportunity is a blessing because I’ve always wanted to play collegiate baseball at the top level.

Bassett had an absolutely amazing junior season with the Pirates. During the regular season, he had a 5-0 record with an earned run average of 0.66. The righty struck out a staggering 52 batters in 32 innings thrown in 8 games, giving up just 11 hits, 10 walks, and three earned runs. He had a WHIP of 0.66.

Bassett defeated Van Ardsdale 10-0 in his first postseason appearance, throwing a no-hitter and striking out 17 of the 18 batters he faced.

Marist saw I had a good connection with my pitching coach (Javins) and that I made progress, ‘ said Bassett, whose arsenal includes a fastball, change-up and slider. They want someone who can throw a lot of innings, throws strikes, and, of course, gets good marks.

The Woodrow resident continued, “They like that I can get outs with them and that I throw all three of my pitches for strikes.” My selection was further influenced by their statement that time can be obtained as a freshman. I’m going to give it my all to help the squad win, and I really want to start playing right immediately.

Although he hasn’t settled on a major, Bassett is thinking about business. He also received offers from Iona and CSI, as well as interest from Sacred Heart and Maine.
