Former President Donald Trump is actively pursuing legal avenues to overturn his criminal conviction in a New York state court. The conviction stems from charges related to falsifying business records, specifically in connection with reimbursements for a “hush money” payment made to an adult film star during his presidency.
Trump’s legal strategy now hinges on a recent landmark Supreme Court decision that extends broad immunity to former presidents from federal prosecution for their official actions.
This decision has emboldened Trump’s legal team to argue that his actions concerning the hush money payments were within the scope of his presidential duties and thus shielded him from state-level criminal prosecution.
The case in question is the only one among several legal battles Trump has faced that have gone to trial. Despite the Supreme Court’s ruling, the New York court where the trial took place had previously rejected Trump’s attempt to move the case to federal jurisdiction.
The federal judge overseeing the case emphasized that the evidence overwhelmingly indicated the payments were personal, unrelated to Trump’s official presidential duties.
Following a unanimous jury verdict in April finding Trump guilty on multiple felony counts, including falsifying business records, Trump has vowed to appeal the conviction.

His sentencing is scheduled for July 11th, with prosecutors expected to file a sentencing recommendation soon. The outcome of Trump’s appeal could have significant implications not only for his legal troubles but also for the broader interpretation of presidential immunity in criminal matters.
