Urgent warning from U.S. postal officials over texting scam called smishing

Dallas The U.S. Postal Service is issuing a serious alert on a fraud that is being communicated to unwary users by text message during the hectic Christmas shipping season.

The fraud involves cell phone owners receiving a text message stating that a USPS shipment cannot be delivered due to missing information, according to postal officials.

According to USPS officials, the message contains a text link that, if clicked, might reveal the user’s bank information and other personal information to unidentified scammers.

According to the news release, the crooks are looking for personally identifiable information, including credit and debit card numbers, date of birth, Social Security numbers, account usernames and passwords, and other sensitive data.

According to the Federal Communications Commission, authorities are referring to this fraud as smishing, a more sophisticated deceitful technique in which individuals pose as representatives of a trustworthy organization or person before providing a link that requests personal information.

Customers must register on the USPS official website in order to receive automated updates regarding the delivery status of their mail or shipments, according to postal officials.

Additionally, USPS offers a service called Informed Delivery that allows you to get emails and updates as soon as the package is scanned. You should go to USPS’s official website to register for this service.

How can I report a scam?

Customers are asked by USPS to take a screenshot of a text message, put it into an email, and submit it to [email protected] in order to report a fraud or potential smishing occurrence.

A screenshot of the bogus text message, the victim’s name, and any other pertinent information must all be included in the email.
