New York’s Staten Island. Students in New York City are eager to rest and unwind from the end of December until the beginning of the new year, and winter recess is just a few days away.
Additionally, public school children will begin winter break earlier than anticipated this year as New York City recently declared that Monday, December 23 would be added as an extra day off.
Winter recess was originally scheduled to begin on Tuesday, December 24, which is also Christmas Eve, according to the city Department of Education’s (DOE) 2024–2025 school calendar. This meant that teachers and students had to report to class on Monday, December 23.
On Monday, December 23, schools will no longer be open. Families will have more time to travel and take vacations thanks to the extra day off during recess.
Thus, Friday, December 20, will be the final day of classes before the break.
The Archdiocese of New York’s Catholic schoolchildren will similarly have their final day of lessons on Friday, December 20, prior to the start of Christmas break.
During this year’s winter recess, public school children will return to school on Thursday, January 2, after taking a total of 12 days off, including weekends.
When Catholic schoolchildren return on Monday, January 6, they will have 16 days off in all, including weekends.
Between the first and last day of schools, the city DOE public school calendar allows for almost two dozen days off. The calendar provides time off for federal holidays, religious holidays, and week-long breaks for winter, mid-winter, and spring breaks.
With time off for mid-winter recess, spring break, and other federal and religious holidays until the last day of schools on Thursday, June 26, public school children will still have plenty of time off after winter break.

There won’t be a mid-winter break for Catholic schools, but kids may anticipate Easter break in April, when classes are out from April 18 to 25. Catholic schools conclude classes on Friday, June 13 at the latest.
