When is winter break for NYC public school students?

New York’s Staten Island. Students in public schools in New York City are undoubtedly counting down the days until winter break later this month, which will provide a weeklong respite from the end of December to the beginning of the new year.

Since there are just two full weeks of courses left until the break begins, students won’t have to wait much longer. New York City recently declared that Monday, December 23 would be added to the list of days off when winter recess began earlier this year.

Winter recess was originally scheduled to begin on Tuesday, December 24, which is also Christmas Eve, according to the city Department of Education’s (DOE) 2024–2025 school calendar. This meant that teachers and students would have to report to class on Monday, December 23.

On Monday, December 23, schools will no longer be open. Families will have more time to travel and take vacations thanks to the extra day off during recess.

Winter break will be observed by public schools from Monday, December 23, through Wednesday, January 1. Friday, December 20, is the last day of courses before the break.

On Thursday, January 2, students will resume their studies on campus.

This means that during this year’s winter recess, pupils will have 12 days off, including weekends.

Between the first and last day of schools, the city DOE public school calendar allows for almost two dozen days off. The calendar provides time off for federal holidays, religious holidays, and week-long breaks for winter, mid-winter, and spring breaks.

With time off for mid-winter vacation, spring break, and other federal and religious holidays until the last day of schools on Thursday, June 26, students will still have plenty of free time after winter break.
