This year’s winter break in New York City gave public schoolchildren an extra day off, and it might happen again the following year.
On Monday, December 23, which had previously been listed as a school day, schools were closed. Families have more time to travel and take vacations thanks to the extra day off during recess. This year, on Thursday, January 2, students resumed their classes following the break.
Some people are wondering if New York City will once more grant students an extra day off for winter break as they look to the calendar for the upcoming school year.
According to the 2025–2025 school calendar, schools will be closed from December 24 to January 1. Students will return to class one day that week on January 2, as that is when classes are scheduled to resume.
Chalkbeat claims that the last time January 2 fell on a Friday was in 2015, when students had the day off. Although they presently have no intentions to alter the 2025–2026 calendar, education officials assured the media source that they would keep talking to stakeholders.
Officials would need to confirm that the city would still adhere to the 180-day school year requirement if it added January 2 as an additional day off.
