New York’s Staten Island — The city Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has declared that Monday, January 20, is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and there will be no garbage, recycling, or compost collection on that day.
On Monday night, residents who typically have their trash, recycling, or compost collected on Mondays should place their goods at the curb. Collection will resume on Tuesday, January 21.
Residents should be aware that following holidays, pickup delays may occur often. In a written statement, DSNY added, “We appreciate your patience as we work to collect the backlog of material.”
Residents of Staten Island should make sure they are following the new regulations that the city has put in place over the last two years when they dispose of their trash.
In an attempt to cut down on the length of time waste spent on the city’s sidewalks, New York City instituted later set-out times for residential and business trash, recycling, and composting on April 1, 2023.
In the past, garbage could be dropped off at the curb for pickup in any major American city starting at 4 p.m. the day before your scheduled pickup.
Residents are now required to wait until 6 p.m. to dispose of their trash due to the new regulations.
Residents must now utilize garbage cans that are 55 gallons or fewer and have tight-fitting lids instead of leaving trash bags on the curb as of November 12.
All garbage must be disposed of in official NYC Bins that are made for automated pickup by June 2026; city dwellers must buy the bins themselves.
