New York’s Staten Island. At the height of the holiday shopping season, Amazon employees are on strike outside their Bloomfield plant Thursday morning.
Workers are expected to demonstrate at locations around the United States as part of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Union strike against Amazon, which started at 6 a.m. East Coast time, according to a union news release.
Media sources reportedly state that workers are demonstrating at a Queens factory.
According to the news release, the Teamsters, who represent around 10,000 Amazon employees, are calling for pay raises, better benefits, and safer working conditions.
According to the news release, the statewide action comes after Amazon repeatedly disregarded the law and refused to negotiate with the thousands of Amazon employees who joined the Teamsters.
The union’s leader admitted that the work stoppage might cause delivery delays on holidays.
If your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame Amazon s insatiable greed, said Teamsters General President Sean M. O Brien in the news release. We set a firm deadline for Amazon to attend the meeting and treat our members fairly. They disregarded it.
These avaricious executives have every opportunity to be decent and respectful of those who enable their heinous riches. Instead, they ve pushed workers to the limit and now they re paying the price. It’s their fault.
The union was established in 1903 and now represents 1.3 million members in Puerto Rico, Canada, and the United States.
