In a last-ditch effort before the Winter Meetings, the Yankees and Mets have extended their offers to Juan Soto into record territory.
Both New York teams have increased their offers to the star outfielder to between $710 million and $730 million, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Heyman noted on Saturday night that the Soto sweepstakes are just a day or two away from ending and that although it is thought the Mets may be a little higher as of Saturday night, the respective bids seem to be within shouting distance.
When Shohei Ohtani signed a 10-year contract with the Dodgers last winter, he set a record that would be broken by any deal worth more than $700 million.
Soto, 26, offers free agency a unique blend of youth and generational skill. Considering that these high-spending competitors were competing against each other, many anticipated that the negotiations would surpass the $700 million threshold from the start.
Soto is also being actively pursued by the Dodgers, Blue Jays, and Red Sox. These five teams have been involved in this procedure.
According to Heyman, the Red Sox and Blue Jays are also thought to have made extremely competitive bids, while the Dodgers, who don’t need to acquire another superstar, shocked everyone by spending well over $600 million. The lowest-bidding Dodgers are still considered the least likely destination despite their apparent appeal, but all three of those teams appear to be in the running.
