Yankees raise initial offer to Juan Soto in free agency statement

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees have already raised their original price for Juan Soto in free agency.

The Yankees were one of five teams who made a preliminary offer for the standout outfield player earlier this week, according to a report from NJ Advance Media.

Heyman noted on Wednesday night that while the current Yankees are demonstrating their determination to attempt to hold onto their top target, they also recognize that the highly anticipated derby is only in the middle innings. Any of the four or more additional teams that are interested still have a chance to earn the reward of the winter, therefore the situation is still open.

Heyman went on to say that although the Yankees have been contacting pitchers, they are still just interested in Soto. They were interested in Blake Snell before he signed with the Dodgers late Tuesday night.

After joining the Yankees in a big trade from the Padres the previous winter, Soto enjoyed a stellar season in 2024, his first season with the team. Whether he signs with the Yankees, Mets, or another high-profile team this summer, his contract may be worth at least $600 million, if not $700 million. The current record is Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million contract with the Dodgers, which was heavily loaded with deferrals. If Soto and agent Scott Boras try to smash that milestone, don’t be shocked.

Heyman claims that Soto is open to a 15-year contract. He would be in his 40s by then. Additionally, according to Heyman, the Yankees are open to offering the star Soto opt-outs as part of their offer.

Earlier last month, Soto and Boras spoke with the Yankees. According to Bob Klapisch of NJ Advance Media, the meeting gave Yankees organization members hope that they might be able to persuade the outfielder to choose the Bronx.
