Yankees sign starting pitcher with 15 years of MLB experience

On Monday, the Yankees signed veteran right-hander Carlos Carrasco to a minor-league contract, bolstering their starting pitching depth.

The arrangement with Carrasco was originally reported by Jack Curry of YES Network. Carrasco may earn up to $2.5 million in performance bonuses in addition to the $1.5 million major league base salary, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Carrasco is starting his 16th MLB season and will be 38 next month. He spent three seasons with the Mets and twelve with Cleveland, with a career ERA of 4.14.

At Yankees camp this spring, the Venezuelan righty will have an opportunity to prove that he is deserving of a big-league shot thanks to his minor-league contract.

Next week, the Yankees will report to spring training with a full starting rotation that includes Carlos Rodn, Luis Gil, Max Fried, Gerrit Cole, and Clarke Schmidt. The sixth person on that depth chart is Marcus Stroman. Since he owes $18 million for this season, he may be sold before Opening Day to make amends. If Stroman throws 140 or more innings in 2025, a vesting option would also begin to run at the same rate for the following season. With players like JT Brubaker and prospects Will Warren and Clayton Beeter vying for playing time this spring, the Yankees also signed former Braves righty Allan Winans earlier this winter.

After the regular season starts, Carrasco might not throw a pitch for the Yankees or their affiliates. If he has a strong spring and there isn’t a position for him at Pinstripes, he might look for a big-league opportunity elsewhere. However, it never hurts to add depth at this time of year.

Carrasco hasn’t been at his best in a number of years, but given the Yankees’ pitching staff’s history, a comeback is always possible. In just one of his previous four seasons, Carrasco’s ERA has been below -5.63. That was with the Mets back in 2022. With a 3.97 ERA, he won 15 games while pitching 152 innings, his best since 2018. Carrasco is in his 30s and has been hindered by injuries. In 2019, he also received a leukemia diagnosis. He overcame it and later that season went back to Cleveland.
