Spencer Jones, an outfield prospect for the New York Yankees, raised serious concerns about his capacity to live up to his high expectations during his first prolonged stint in the major leagues.
Jones came in sixth on Baseball America’s list of the Yankees’ top ten prospects. He was ranked No. 6 in 2023 and No. 2 in 2024 by the Yankees. Additionally, BA’s grade slipped from a 60 and extremely high previous season to a 55 with an extreme risk grade. Additionally, it reduced his hit tool from a 40 to a 30.

Jones became the first Yankees minor leaguer to reach 200 strikeouts, according to BA.
Jones is in dire need of a successful 2025 campaign. His stock will increase if he can reduce his strikeouts even little. He appears to be a versatile player who may be less than the sum of his parts for the time being.
The 23-year-old was incredibly productive on contact last season, recording a.259/.336/.452 line with 17 home runs, 78 RBIs, and 25 steals but fanning in 36.8% of his plate appearances (544) in Double-A.
Of the batters with 300 plate appearances in the major leagues last season, only three had K rates at least that high, and they were all much below average. The fact that the top seven strikeout percentage producers all had wRC+ (league average) below 100 raises concerns about their future playing time.
All of this is not to suggest that Jones will never make a significant impact or make it to the majors because he has other outstanding tools. But with such serious contact problems, his journey is far more challenging.
