ALBANY, N.Y. Authorities confirmed Tuesday that an 11-year-old girl had also died after falling through the ice while attempting to assist a 12-year-old boy who had jumped in before her over the weekend.
According to a news release from Albany police, the youngster attempted to cross the frozen lake and fell through the ice while the two kids were at Washington Park Lake in Albany at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
According to the authorities, the girl tried to assist the boy by following him but also fell in.
After being rescued by Albany police and firefighters, the girl was transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital in severe condition. Police reported the girl’s death from her wounds on Tuesday.
Around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, a dive team from the New York State authorities discovered the boy’s body, according to the authorities.
Given how thin the ice was, Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan said it was unexpected that the kids made it this far.
“It’s just a reminder of how fragile life can be and how important it is that we make sure that everyone in our community, including our children, knows that going out onto the ice on any of the bodies of water here is not a safe thing to do,” Sheehan told TV station WNYT.
