Get ready for the buzz! This spring, trillions of periodical cicadas are expected to emerge from the ground, filling the air with their loud buzzing sounds and leaving behind molted exoskeletons.
These cicadas, which come in both 13-year and 17-year cycles, will start appearing in May or early June 2024, depending on the location and soil temperature.
In Georgia, the 13-year cicadas will make their appearance, while in Illinois, it will be the turn of the 17-year cicadas. Despite their large numbers and noisy presence, these cicadas are harmless and typically only stay above ground for about a month before returning to the soil.
Looking ahead to 2076, an even larger emergence is expected when the two largest broods of cicadas will emerge simultaneously.
This event could see hundreds of trillions, or even quadrillions, of cicadas emerging, primarily in states like Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.
