The bodies of two teenagers, Elyjha Chandler and Christian Perkins, who tragically disappeared after being swept away by a powerful wave at Jacob Riis in Queens Beach, have finally been recovered.
The devastating incident occurred on June 21, when Elyjha, aged 16, and Christian, aged 17, were enjoying an evening at the beach with friends. Despite efforts by bystanders and emergency responders, including a courageous rescue attempt by a bystander, the teens were pulled out to sea before help could reach them.
For over a week, the community rallied in support of the families, hoping for a miracle as search operations spanned approximately 600 square miles of open ocean. The Coast Guard, leading the extensive search efforts, eventually called off their search days later due to the challenging conditions and vast area to cover. Throughout this harrowing period, Elyjha’s father, Ushell Chandler, and Christian’s family maintained a vigil on the beach, clinging to hope as they awaited news of their sons’ fates.
On Saturday evening, Elyjha Chandler’s body was found near Beach 114th Street, followed by the discovery of a body believed to be Christian Perkins’s near Beach 149th Street the next morning. The heartbreaking confirmation came as Ushell Chandler positively identified his son through photos provided by the authorities. Despite the closure of finding their loved ones, the families continue to grapple with profound grief and the sudden loss of these vibrant young lives.
The tragic incident poignantly reminds us of the unpredictable dangers posed by ocean currents and the importance of beach safety. It has deeply impacted the local community and sparked discussions on enhancing safety measures at public beaches to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
