Florida Governor Receives 20 Bills, Including Measures to Address Street Racing and School Safety

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has recently been handed a stack of 20 bills for consideration. One of these bills, known as SB 1674, aims to tackle the issue of “street takeovers,” which include activities like street racing, drag racing, and stunt racing.

Supporters of the bill argue that it’s necessary to crack down on these dangerous activities. If passed, the bill would impose heavier fines and potential jail time for individuals involved in street takeovers.

For instance, first-time offenders could face fines of up to $2,000, a significant increase from the current $500 penalty. Repeat offenders within a year could even face third-degree felony charges, a more severe consequence compared to the current first-degree misdemeanor charges.

Another important bill that Governor DeSantis received is HB 1473, which focuses on enhancing school safety measures. This bill proposes new requirements for school districts to follow regarding perimeter and door safety.

Under the proposed changes, all gates and access points on school campuses would need to remain closed and locked while students are present, unless these points are actively monitored by staff.
