Law enforcement agencies near Tampa launched “Operation Keep Our Streets” on Monday, a targeted effort to combat illegal street racing and related traffic violations. This initiative, prompted by the implementation of SB 1764, aimed to enforce stricter penalties for street racing and roadway takeovers across the Tampa Bay area.
The operation focused primarily on two notorious locations for street racing: the Gandy Bridge and Courtney Campbell Causeway in Pinellas County. These areas have been frequent spots for high-speed racing incidents, often involving drivers exceeding speeds of 100 mph.
During the operation, law enforcement conducted a total of 457 traffic stops, resulting in significant enforcement actions. This included issuing 162 traffic citations for various violations and providing 295 traffic warnings to motorists. Additionally, officers made five DUI arrests and issued 18 criminal citations, targeting not only street racers but also individuals involved in other illegal activities on the roads.
Among the key outcomes of “Operation Keep Our Streets,” 32 individuals were arrested specifically for street racing offenses. These arrests underline the ongoing challenge posed by illegal racing activities and the determination of authorities to address public safety concerns proactively.
While the Howard Frankland Bridge was excluded from the operation due to ongoing construction, recent incidents of reckless driving and speeding continue to underscore the need for robust enforcement measures. Law enforcement officials emphasized the dangers associated with street racing, citing a recent rollover crash with injuries linked to reckless driving behavior.
State officials reiterated the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in reporting illegal street racing incidents promptly. They advised the public not to engage with participants and to prioritize safety by pulling over and notifying authorities immediately.
