A family trip to New York City turned into a nightmare for a tourist from Texas when he was suddenly and viciously sucker-punched by a stranger. The incident occurred on June 20 around 8:30 p.m., while the family was waiting for the train on the northbound platform at the 59th and Lexington Avenue subway station in Midtown Manhattan.
Veynu Narasimhan, 41, was standing with his wife, Regina Koshy, and their children, soaking in the ambiance of the bustling city, when a stranger approached him out of nowhere. Without any provocation or warning, the assailant delivered a powerful punch to Narasiman’s face. The impact of the blow was so severe that it left Narasiman with multiple facial fractures and profuse bleeding.
“He was bleeding profusely from both nostrils, and he was spitting out blood,” Koshy recounted. “The right side of his face was all swollen.” The radiology report later confirmed the extent of his injuries, noting multiple fractures in Narasiman’s face and a midline fracture behind his nose, amounting to a total of 12 broken bones.
The suddenness and brutality of the attack left the family in shock. “Still a little bit shocked about the randomness and craziness of what happened,” Narasimhan said. The children, who were visiting New York City for the first time, were terrified by the incident.
Koshy described the fear and confusion that gripped her as she watched the assault unfold. “I saw him, and I actually yelled at him; I said, ‘Hey, what are you doing?’ He turned, and he looked at me, so I got a good look at his face, and then he continued walking,” she said. The assailant’s calm demeanor as he walked away added to the surreal and horrifying nature of the event.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported Narasiman to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. Despite the severity of the attack, he was reported to be in stable condition.
The NYPD launched an investigation into the assault, but as of now, no arrests have been made. Surveillance footage from the subway station is being reviewed, and the police are urging anyone with information to come forward. “I think that he needs mental help, and I hope he doesn’t do this to another person,” Koshy said, reflecting on the potential danger the attacker poses to others.
The incident has raised concerns about safety in the subway system, even though overall felony assaults on the subway have decreased by 8.9%, according to the latest NYPD data. The random nature of the attack underscores the unpredictable risks that commuters and visitors can face.
