California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced plans to introduce emergency legislation to aid individuals affected by Arizona’s recent abortion ban. The proposed legislation aims to streamline the certification process for Arizona doctors to perform abortions in California.
Speaking from a Planned Parenthood clinic in Sacramento, Governor Newsom highlighted the importance of taking action to support individuals facing barriers to reproductive healthcare. The legislation, to be introduced in collaboration with California’s Women’s Caucus, is scheduled to take effect on May 1.
The initiative was inspired by a call to action from Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, who emphasized the need to expedite licensing for Arizona providers in California.
Mayes expressed gratitude for the partnership with Governor Newsom and California Attorney General Rob Bonta in addressing the urgent healthcare needs of Arizonans.
The decision to propose this legislation follows the Arizona Supreme Court’s ruling to uphold a longstanding abortion ban dating back to 1864.
Despite efforts to repeal the law, which lacks exceptions for victims of rape or incest, Arizona House Republicans blocked its repeal, prompting Governor Newsom’s response.
