A tragic incident occurred in Orange County on Monday, May 20, at Hudson Valley Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, a car dealership located on Route 17K in the town of Newburgh. The unfortunate event unfolded in the dealership’s parking lot, leading to the death of a pedestrian.
According to the Newburgh Police Department, the incident involved a 2024 Jeep Wrangler driven by a 68-year-old man. The driver was attempting to enter a parking space when the vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly accelerated. The Jeep struck a pedestrian who was walking directly in front of the vehicle at the time.
Eyewitnesses reported that the Jeep did not stop after hitting the pedestrian. Instead, the vehicle continued to move across Route 17K with the man trapped underneath it. The horrifying scene ended when the vehicle finally came to a stop, allowing emergency responders to reach the injured man.
The pedestrian, whose identity has not yet been disclosed pending notification of next of kin, was immediately rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh. Despite the swift medical response, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The Newburgh Police are actively investigating the incident to determine the exact cause of the sudden acceleration. At this stage, it remains unclear whether mechanical failure, driver error, or other factors contributed to the tragic accident. To date, no charges have been filed against the driver, but the investigation is ongoing.
Local residents and customers of the dealership expressed their shock and sorrow over the incident. Many have called for a thorough investigation to ensure such a tragedy does not happen again. The management at Hudson Valley Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram has also expressed their condolences to the victim’s family and stated that they are fully cooperating with the police investigation.
